Welcome To My Channel

Author: Iyun-Ade Odedina

Opal is a would-be writer and influencer who lives in Los Angeles with her husband and son. And she needs to reinvent herself… again. She’s sure that if she could just be someone else, someone like her friends who are rich and beautiful and talented, she could be a literary darling too, or a self-made social-media millionaire. When money gets tight and her husband starts hinting to her about getting a 'real' job, Opal is more determined than ever to make a success of her Instagram channel. Then one day Opal discovers that she has Nigerian heritage with the help of a discounted DNA kit and decides that this latest identity is the start of a whole new venture.

Bisi has lived all her life on a secluded farm outside of Lagos, Nigeria with her herbalist mother, Priestess. But when Priestess has a stroke, Bisi has no choice but to accept outside help from one of her mother’s wealthy clients and her driver, Heavy. Heavy is a man who prides himself on connecting the dots and making things happen. And when he sees Bisi’s farm, he sees an opportunity to realize his ambitions of financial freedom.

Desperate for some agency over her life, Bisi is drawn into Heavy's orbit and is swept up in an online scam that offers Opal the chance to become the brand ambassador for a Western-style wellness retreat for bohemian Back-to-Africa Americans. This upends Bisi’s quiet rural existence – she has never even used a computer before, much less posted on social media – and forces her out of the shadow of her commandeering mother. And while caring for her mother, Bisi realises Priestess has secrets of her own when she finds a mysterious ID card in her bedroom. But Bisi now has Google at her disposal and Google shows her that the man in the photo, who may or may not be her father, is a famous artist living in Paris, leading Bisi to question everything she has ever known. Meanwhile, over in Los Angeles, Opal cashes the fake cheque Heavy sends setting off a domino effect which sees her stealing from her family and the breakdown of her already fractured marriage.
