Echoes of Yesterday
Christmas Eve, 1970: In a stately manor in La Mancha, the elderly and ailing Emiliano Quesada—a once-powerful landowner and veteran of the Nationalist side in the Spanish Civil War—celebrates Christmas Eve with his wife, his two sons, and their families. Among them are Saturnino, the youngest son and a jazz musician devoted to Sidney Bechet's "Petite Fleur"; Antonio, the obedient eldest son; Antonio’s wife, Marisa; and their two children, Santi and Isabel. However, the festive dinner ends in tragedy when Emiliano chokes on his favorite treat—giant prawns brought by Antonio each year. A subsequent autopsy reveals that a tiny piece of shell, left unpeeled, caused his untimely death.
The incident leads to the dismissal of the servant and fuels rumors in the village of a family curse—a curse from which no Quesada will escape.
December 1999, Valencia: Decades later, Isabel is awakened by a late-night phone call. Her brother Santi, now an emergency room doctor, has died—choking during his hospital Christmas dinner. His death plunges Isabel into a deep depression, ending her fragile relationship with her boyfriend and rekindling her doubts about the Quesada family curse, something she had always dismissed as silly superstition.
Spring 2001: Having slowly recovered, Isabel leads a quiet and solitary life. Her most intimate moments are spent speaking to the urn containing Santi’s ashes, placed in her living room. One morning, an unexpected call from a lawyer in Albacete offers her the chance to sell the Quesada family lands, which she now solely owns. Unsure of what to do, Isabel decides to visit the estate during the Easter holidays. Returning to the family manor for the first time since that fateful Christmas Eve of 1970, Isabel begins uncovering long-buried family secrets.
As the past comes to light, the shadow of the Quesada curse looms once again, and the haunting notes of "Petite Fleur," her uncle Saturnino’s favorite tune, echo through her memories.
